NWDT Tutu Pledge Drive
2011-2012
NWDT is very excited to announce our spring 2012 production of Dance in Bloom where we will be performing excerpts from the classical ballet Raymonda as well as several original works. Raymonda, a classical love story ballet, was choreographed by Marius Petipa with music by Alexander Glazunov. It was first performed by the Imperial Ballet in 1898 in St. Petersburg, Russia and has since been staged by many famous directors, including Anna Pavlova, George Balanchine, and Rudolf Nureyev. Our directors selected this ballet for its ability to showcase a wide variety of styles and talents among all of our dancers. We began work on our Dance in Bloom production in August at our summer dance intensive and are pleased to perform it April 13th through 15th at The Bodyvox Theatre in Northwest Portland.
To truly bring Raymonda to life, NWDT would like to purchase a tutu for each of the ballerinas in the company. The tutu has been called one of the greatest costuming inventions of all time, some describing it as a "magic circle" around the ballerina. It is the immediate vision people have when thinking about ballet. The classical tutu is complicated to make, and involves many yards of netting, tulle, and satin. At approximately $500 per tutu, our goal is to raise $10,000 toward the purchase of 20 beautiful white tutus, with storage boxes for each. This major investment will support performances for many years to come, allowing future young dancers the opportunity to dance in performance-quality costumes.
To accomplish our goal, we need your donations, large or small. In order to raise money through grants, funding agencies, and charitable giving organizations, non-profit organizations must demonstrate high value to the community they serve with a wide spectrum of large and small donations representing as many patrons as possible. This means a pledge of even $10 can make a difference. Our pledge drive will run from December 17th, 2011 to January 17th, 2012. Each contribution is tax deductible. Pledges can be made by cash, check or credit card, and pledge forms are available here.
