Sleeping Beauty
at the Sherwood Center for the Arts

Northwest Dance Theatre is proud to present the Prologue from the timeless classic "The Sleeping Beauty". Written by Charles Perrault and set to the beautiful music of composer Yurich Tchaikovsky, the introductory Prologue scene features exquisite handmade costumes in cotton-candy hues. With original choreography by Marius Petipa, the Prologue has been specially adapted for NWDT by Artistic Director, June Taylor-Dixon. The Prologue scene feature a grand ceremony to celebrate the Christening of Princess Aurora, attended by the Lilac Fairy and six other fairies to bestow gifts to the child. The ceremony is interrupted by the evil fairy, Carabosse. The powerful Lilac Fairy intervenes and alters the curse the evil Carabosse places on the child. In addition to this glimpse into "The Sleeping Beauty" ballet, NWDT will perform several modern and jazz works, featuring choreography by M'Liss Stephenson and Laura Haney.

This adaptation of the beloved Nutcracker story has become a Portland family tradition that continues to sell-out each year for all performances! Follow Clara and her Nutcracker Prince as they conquer the Rat King, journey through the magical Snow Kingdom, and visit the Land of Sweets. With beautifully crafted sets and costumes this holiday classic brings joy to audience members of all ages. Devised and choreographed by June Taylor-Dixon with additional choreography by Cameron Smith and Kim Schroeder. This year’s performance will be held at the Newmark Theatre in downtown Portland. Tickets will go on sale in October at Portland5.com.
